IN THE SHADOW OF DEATH

The editorial family bows in sorrowful grief this week. On Monday morning the Angel of Death hovered over our home, taking the writer's mother, coming almost without warning and going so quickly as to add a double portion of sorrow.

About three weeks ago mother was taken to LeMars for treatment, it being realized that she was in a serious condition, but no relief was obtained, and she grew weaker and weaker, and on Thursday of last week they returned home, just three days before she passed to her reward. The children away from home were all telegraphed for Saturday afternoon and arrived Sunday morning to be at the bedside of their departing loved one. Mother's condition at this time however was not considered serious, but almost ere the dawn of another day her spirit had left us.

The funeral services were held from the American Reformed church, Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock, Reverends Douma and DeJonge conducting the services. [There follows a sentimental poem.]

OBITUARY

Kate Sipma was born at Pella, Marion County, Iowa May 19th, 1862. She came to Sioux county with her parents in 1871--her father, Sjourd Sipma being one of the committee that came from Pella to Northwest Iowa and chose Sioux county as a place for a new home.

On March 24, 1880, she was united in marriage to Charles N. Sawyer. To this union there wre born seven children, three sons and four daughters, five of whom are living and are Mrs. Charles L. Wynia, of Aberdeen, South Dakota; Charles O., of Hull; Stuart O. of Lismore, Minnesota; Mrs. William Meylink, of Carmel; and Henry L., of Hull. The other two, Mary and Martha, died in infancy.

[Illegible line] about six months ago she began to gradually get worse. Everything that medical aid could do was done, but to no avail, and on Monday morning, July 21, 1913, at 8:25 she passed to her reward.

Mrs. Sawyer was a fond and loving mother, a good and devoted wife and a christian woman.

Besides the children mentioned above, the deceased leaves a devoted and loving husband, four brothers and four sisters to mourn a loss that cannot be replaced. The sisters are Mrs. P. DeJong, of Newkirk; Mrs. Andrew VandeBerg, of Orange City; Mrs. John Boterman, of Hospers; and Mrs. W. VanderSchaaf, of Newkirk. The brothers are: John Sipma, of Crawford, Colorado; Oscar and Richard Sipma, of Gascoyne, North Dakota; and Sip Sipma, of South Dakota. Oscar being the only brother able to be present at the funeral. Other relatives from abroad who attended the funeral were George Martin of Chicago, Mrs. G. Sipma of Hospers, and Mr. and Mrs. Coon DeJong of Hospers.
[There follows a generalized sentimental statement, and a card of thanks.]
