HAWARDEN, Iowa - George William Hartman, 88, of Hawarden died Friday, June 26, 1998, at Hass Hillcrest Care Center in Hawarden.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the American Lutheran Church in Hawarden with the Rev. Jeff Swanson and the Rev. Andy Chako officiating. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Mr. Hartman was born Dec. 19, 1909, near Akron, Iowa in Union County, S.D., the son of Bernhard and Trientje (Saathoff) Hartman. He was baptized July 3, 1910, at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Chatsworth, Iowa and confirmed March 28, 1926, at Evangelical Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron. He married Lula Anna C. Rohlfs Jan. 22, 1935, in Akron. They moved to a farm in Union County in 1935, and moved to the family farm in 1940. In 1950 he began raising registered Quarter Horses as a hobby. She died Nov. 11, 1974. He enjoyed helping other horse owners with their horses, and was a 48-year member of the American Quarter Horse Association along with many other horse organizations. He had also been a member of the Hawarden American Lutheran Church since 1968.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Wilbur and Yvonne of Hawarden; five grandchildren, Barbette Grimm, Chad Hartman, Kathy McInnis, Jenny Hartman, and Luke Hartman; eight great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law, Helen Hartman of Akron, Merva Hartman and Lila Rohlfs, both of Hawarden, and Harriet Rohlfs of Sioux City; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two infant brothers; four brothers, Hye, John, Alfred, and William; and four sisters, Tracy Hendricks, Minnie Jacobs, Tina Helmrichs, and Bernadine Kruse.
