J. (Jacob) Korteweg passed peacefully away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Gleysteen in this city, Thursday afternoon, at the ripe old age of eighty-four years. He was born in Klundert, Netherlands. On October 12th, 1854, he was miited in marriage to Miss Sya Anna Vogelaar.
Two children were born to them, Mrs. W. H. Hospers of Orange City, and Mrs. John Gleysteen of this city.
Their union was a happy one and they journeyed together through life, enjoying its blessings and sorrows until March 24th, I860, when she
was called upon to answer the summons of death.
He was among the early settlers of the county, coming here in 1870, and has seen this country grow and develop into what it is today.
On December 24, 1871, he was married to Miss Reintz Koopmans. They lived together happily for eight years, until April 6th, 1879, when he was
again called upon to mourn the loss of a loving helpmate. His youngest daughter, Helena, remained with him in his sorrow and cheered him along life's pathway, until her marriage to
Mr. John Gleysteen of this city, since which time he has made his home with them.
He was a good citizen and a conscientious
and devout Christian, and his death will be universally mourned. His two daughters, Mrs. W. H. Hospers of Orange City and Mrs. John Gleysteen of this city, together with a number of grandchildren, are the only relatives that survive him.
The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the Reformed church in this city.
THE DEMOCRAT sympathizes with the bereaved relatives and friends.
