ALTON, Iowa—Anthony E. “Tony” Pottebaum, 61, of Alton, died unexpectedly Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at his residence.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton, with the Rev. James Tigges officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a rosary at 3 p.m. said by the St. Mary’s Rosary Society, a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and a rosary at 8 p.m. said by the Catholic Order of Foresters, at the church. Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen, Iowa, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Pottebaum was born July 7, 1936, in rural Alton, the son of Anton and Anna (Pick) Pottebaum. He was raised in the Alton areas and attended St. Mary’s Academy in Alton.

He was then a farm laborer in the Granville and Alton area. He served in the U.S. Army for four years and was then employed at the Alton Premium Feed. In 1960, he went into farming for himself.

He married Janet Gergen on Aug. 29, 1961, in Granville, Iowa. The couple continued farming near Alton and in 1963 they moved to a farm near Hospers, Iowa. In 1967 they moved to their farm near Alton.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the church choir and the Catholic Order of Foresters, and was a past commissioner for 12 years and an alternate commissioner for the Sioux County Soil Conservation Board, the county manager for Archer’s Oil and a past deal for Cargill Seed for many years.

Survivors include his wife; six daughters, Deb and her husband, Mark VanRoekel, of Waterloo, Iowa, Margie and her husband, Scott Simonson, of Sioux Center, Iowa, Sherry and her husband, Tom Powers, of Denison, Iowa, Chris Pottebaum of Sioux City, Jean and her husband, Jeff Shrum, of Eagan, Minn., and Carla Pottebaum and her fiancé, Jay Franzmeier, of Waverly, Iowa; five sons, Larry and his wife, Shelly, of Marion, Iowa, Gary and Danny and his wife, Renae, all of Alton, Darrell and his wife, Susan, of Indianola, Iowa, and Rick and his wife, Bonnie Sue, of England; 12 grandchildren; five sisters, Tarsella and her husband, Milo Probst, and Florence Thole, all of Alton, Berdella and her husband, Herb Schueller, of Primghar, Iowa, Mary Ann and her husband, Art Walker, of Clermont, Fla., and Donna Rae and her husband, Kenneth Krogman, of Ashton, Iowa; six brothers and their wives, Ivan and Clare of Granville, Eugene and Eny of Rock Valley, Iowa, Howard and Doris and Orville and Mary Ann, all of Alton, Arlin and Marlene of Hospers and Ike and Carol of LeMars; and a brother-in-law, Ambrose Block of Hospers.
