Mrs. Jane Navis Succumbs to Brief Illness Caused Chiefly by Weight of Increasing Age. Funeral will be Held Here This Morning.

Mrs. Jane Navis, a pioneer resident of Iowa, and a member of one of the first colonies whichever settled in this state, died on Wednesday morning at the home of her daughter Mrs. J. A. North, on Central avenue, in this city. Her death was due to old age. She had been failing in health for the past year. She was the mother of Mrs. Niel Druger and Mrs. J. A. North of this city and her death took place exactly four years to the day on which her son in law, Neil Druger, popular Le Mars business man died.
Mrs. Navis was born in Amsterdam (actually in Gelderland Netherlands) eighty five years ago. Her maiden name was Jane Muilenburg, and she was born on September 4, 1837. When a girl of twelve years of age she came with her parents to the United States. They came west to Pella in Iowa and were members of the colony of Hollanders which established themselves in what was then considered the far west. She grew up among the sturdy pioneer conditions which engendered self reliance and a faith, which did not need to be bolstered up by convention and societies. She was early associated in life with the doctrines of the Presbyterian church, and all her life lived a good, true conscientions christian life. At the age of eighteen she was untied in marriage with Martin Vande Schlott (VanderSloot), with whom she lived in wedded life for many years fraught with happiness in addition to the cares of earning a livelihood and rearing a large family of children, who have gone out into the world and made good thier own names and those of their progenitors.
Martin Vander Sloot died some years ago and the deceased married Mr. Navis, who died a year and a half ago. she was the mother of Thirteen children, seven of whom survive a devoted mother. They are Henry Vander Sloot of Sanborn, martin of Sheldon, Jacob of Sloan, Mrs. Henrietta Peterson of Keokuk, Cornelius of Moline IL, Mrs. J. A. North and Mrs. C. N. Druger of this place. There are twenty five grand children and eight great grand children, who miss the presence of a woman, loveable and gracious and one in whom faith radiated and abounded. She was a member of the Presbyterian churcd since young womanhood. The funeral will be held this morning at the Engelken undertaking parlors, Rev. J. M. Auracher and Rev. H. V. Comin officiating and the interment made in the city cemetery of Le Mars.
(Jane was also married in a second marriage to Aart VanMevern. She was born September 4, 1838 in Vuren Gelderland Netherlands to Cornelius Muilenburg and Hendrika Willemstijn)
