SIBLEY—Jake A. De Jong, 79, Sibley, died Monday, March 25, at Sibley Nursing and Rehab Center. Services were Thursday, March 28, at First Reformed Church in Sibley, with the Rev. Gary Van Heukelom officiating. Burial was at Holman Township Cemetery in Sibley, under the direction of Andringa Funeral Home in Sibley. Jake De Jong, son of Gerrit Sr. and Tillie (Feenstra) De Jong, was born March 25, 1923, in Orange City, where he lived his youth and attended school. He served in the U.S. Army 1944-1946 during World War II.
He married Minnie Van Gelderen of Sibley, on Dec. 6, 1946, in Sibley. They lived in Sibley, where he worked as a farmhand for 20 years and as a milk hauler for 20 years. He was a member of First Reformed Church in Sibley since 1944 and served as a deacon. He was head usher for 27 years at church. He took pride in being of service to the church in that way. Survivors include his wife, Minne De Jong of Sibley; three brothers, Hessel and Anne De Jong of Rock Rapids, Gerrit Jr. and Erma De Jong of Sibley, and Arnold De Jong of South Sioux City, NE; five sisters, Gertrude Zwikker of Sibley, Tillie and Wilbur Rook of Rock Valley, Effie Faber of Chino, CA, Louise Jacobsma of Bigelow, MN, and Jennie Engelkes of Benson, MN; and a sister-in-law, Florence De Jong of Round Lake, MN. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
