Hawarden Independent, October 10, 1935

Mrs. Elizabeth Wallace, aged Hawarden lady, passed away at her home in this city shortly after 11 o'clock last Thursday morning from infirmities incident to her advanced years. She had been in steadily failing health for the past year although her condition did not become critical until about a month ago when she suffered a hemorrhage and was obligated to take to her bed from which she never recovered although she remained conscious to the last.

Funeral services were held at 11 o'clock last Friday morning at the Associated church with Rev. T. H. Harding in charge. Accompanied by a son, Alexander L. Wallace of Ames, and a daughter, Mrs. Edith Reddick of Des Moines, the body was taken Friday afternoon to the old home at Monticello, Wis., where interment was made beside her husband.

Elizabeth Moore, eldest daughter of Joseph & Mary Lynn Moore, was born in County Amtrim, Ireland, May 13, 1843, so at the time of her death had reached the advanced age of 92 years, 4 months and 20 days. She came to America with her parents in 1850 and they located on a farm in Green County, Wis., where she grew to young womanhood. In 1864 she was united in marriage with William Wallace. Shortly after their marriage her husband left to join the Union army and remained until the close of the Civil War, participating in the last siege of Petersburg. After his discharge from the army he returned to Green County and continued farming until his retirement from active work. He passed away in 1909.

Ten children, five daughters and five sons were born to Mr. & Mrs. Wallace of whom the following seven survive: Alexander L. Wallace, Ames, Iowa; Mrs. Lillian W. Maynard, Hawarden; William Wallace of Idaho; Eldon Wallace, Estherville, Iowa; Edith W. Reddick, Des Moines; Nina W. Jasman, Sioux Falls, and Leslie Wallace of Texas. Three children, Joseph, Myrtie and Effie, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Wallace came to Hawarden in 1916 and since that time has resided in her own home with the exception of seven years when she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Maynard. She was a member of the Presbyterian church and took such part in church activities as her strength permitted. She possessed decidedly literary talent and a number of years ago collaborated with her daughter, Mrs. Maynard, in the preparation of a serial story dealing with her early life in Wisconsin which obtained much publicity through its publication in a magazine of wide circulation. She was admired and loved by a wide circle of friends who will long cherish her memory.

Out of town relatives who were here to attend the funeral included two sons, Alexander Wallace of Ames and Eldon Wallace of Estherville, and two daughters, Mrs. Edith Reddick of Des Moines, and Mrs. Nina Jasman of Sioux Falls.
