John A. Van Vugt
October 22, 1916--July 15, 1996

John A. Van Vugt, 79, of Orange City, died Monday, July 15, at the Orange City Municipal Hospital.

Services will be Wednesday, July 17, at 1:30 p.m. in Christ Chapel at Northwestern College, Orange City, with the Rev. Ralph A. Pontier officiating. Interment will follow at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home in Orange City.

Van Vugt was born October 22, 1916, at Hull, North Dakota, the son of Arie and Nellie (Groen) Van Vugt. He married Janet Stam at Westfield, North Dakota, on December 15, 1945. They made their home in North Dakota, moving to Orange City in September 1972. She died April 20, 1981, at Orange City. He became a resident of Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City in November 1994.

He was a farmer and later became a carpenter. He was employed by Don Mouw Construction and Kepp Construction, both in Orange City. In later years, he was a custodian in the maintenance department at Northwestern College. He was a member of Calvary Christian Reformed Church, where he had served as an elder on the consistory.

Survivors include four children and their spouses, John Arie and Barb Van Vugt of Hospers, Sturgis Wayne and Gail Van Vugt of Sioux Center, Beth Louise and John Postier of Rochester, Minnesota, and Arlyn Dean and Camela Van Vugt of Orange City; three brothers and three sisters, Ann Smit of Chicago, Illinois, Peter Van Vugt of Orange City, Winnie Rowerdink of Strasburg, North Dakota, Gerrit Van Vugt of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Jacob Van Vugt of Phoenix, Arizona, and Helen Tschritter of Grand Rapids; and 13 grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Arlys; a son, Norman; and two brothers, William and Ernest Van Vugt.

Memorials are being directed to Christian schools.

These obituaries give the death datess of his children Arlys (May 15, 1957) and Norman (July 20, 1960), and the names of his grandchildren: Carissa, Cara and John Lee Van Vugt; Stacey, Kyle, Timothy and Todd Van Vugt; Matthew and Neil Postier; and Ryan, Erica, Aaron and Zachary Van Vugt. The Sioux County Capital obituary adds that he served in the United States Army during World War II.
