From the Alton Democrat of July 2, 1898 Hawarden News.
Mrs. Amos Hodgin, accompanied by Dr. McCarty, went to Chicago last week Tuesday, to undergo a surgical operation. On Thursday Mr. Hodgin received a telegram stating that his wife had died Sunday of inflammation of the bowels. Mrs. Hodgin had been a great sufferer for a long time with throat trouble. Her death is a sad blow to the family and friends.
(1885 census of Buncombe Tsp. Sioux county lists Amos Hodgin 36 born in Ohio, wife Mathilda 30 born in Ohio, children Ernest 8, Earl 2 living with them was Marion Doudna (an inlaw) brother of Mathilda. In an ancestry.com account Mathilda was also listed a Mathilda Doudna. She was born 12 Oct 1854 Ohio and died 26 Jun 1898 buried in the Hawarden Cemetery.
