Richard, who was known as "Dick," was the son of John and Agnes (Mulder) Van Zanten. He graduated from the Orange City High School, attended Morningside College in Sioux City, and later received his Masters degree from the Denver University. He served in the United States Army during World War II.
On June 12, 1952, he married Jean Heernstra at Orange City. They lived in several comniunities, hut made their home in Orange City when Dick was a business teacher at the Northwestern Academy. He later entered civil service, most recently working for the labor department of the federal government. From 1982 to 1989, they lived in Sioux City. They then returned to Orange City to retire.
He was a member of the First Reformed Church.
Survivors include his wife; three children, Robert of LeMars; Debra Gnewuch of Everson, Washington; and Donald and his wife, Kristin, of Sioux City; four grandchildren; four brothers, C.E., of Orange City; John of Alton; Tony of Otsego, Michigan; and Henry of Grand Rapids, Michigan; and three sisters, Mrs. Joseph (Bertha) Rexwinkel of Orange City; Mrs. Harold (Sadie) Hansen of Alton; and Mrs. Adrian (Irene) Ekdom of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Richard W. "Dick" Van Zanten, 70, of Orange City died unexpectedly Friday, Feb. 17, 1995, at the Orange City Municipal HospitaL
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at the First Reformed Church in Orange City with the Rev. Steven Vander Molen officiating. Burial will be in the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 2 to 3:30 p.m., at the Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home in Orange City.
He was born August 4, 1924, in Sioux City, the son of John and Agnes (Mulder) Van Zanten. He
graduated from Orange City High School and attended Morningside College. He later received his master’s degree from Denver University. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He married Jean Heemstra June 12, 1952, in Orange City. They lived in several communities, but made their home in Orange City when he was a business teacher at Northwestern Academy. He later entered civil service, most recently working for the Labor Department of the federal government. The couple lived in Sioux City from 1982 to 1989 before retiring in Orange City. Mr. Van Zanten was a member of the First Reformed Church.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert of Le Mars, Iowa, and Donald and his wife Kristin of Sioux City; a daughter, Debra Gnewuch of Everson, Wash.; four grandchildren; four brothers, C.E. of Orange City, John of Alton, Iowa, Tony of Otsego, Mich., and Henry of Grand Rapids,
Mich.; three sisters, Mrs. Joseph (Bertha) Rexwinkel of Orange City; Mrs. Harold (Sadie) Hansen of Alton, Iowa, and Mrs. Adrian (Irene) Ekdom of Sioux Falls, S.D.
