Rock Valley, IA: Gertrude Van Zanten, 102, of
Rock Valley, died at the Valley Manor Saturday,
January 26, 2008. Funeral Service will be 10:30 am Tuesday at the First Christian
Reformed Church, Rock Valley. Burial at Valley View Cemetery. Rev. Gene Vis will be
officiating. Visitation will be Monday with the family present 6:30-8 pm at Porter Funeral
Home of Rock Valley.
Gertrude was born April 22, 1905 at Leeuwarden, Friesland, daughter of Sipke and Johanna (Weiier) Dorhout. The family came to the USA to the Sioux Center, IA area in 1908. Gertrude married William Van Zanten on February 14, 1928 at the family homestead near Sioux Center. Gertrude and William farmed in the Lebanon-Hawarden area before farming north of Rock Valley beginning in 1939. William died on July 27, 1954. Gert moved to Rock Valley in 1957 and to Four Seasons in 1992. She moved to the Valley Manor on February 7, 2007.
Gertrude is survived by her sons, Bill (Margene) Van Zanten of Rock Valley, Gerald (Janis) Van Zanten of ldyllwild, CA; daughters, Bertha (Gilbert) Roozeboom of Pella, IA, Jo (Duane) Vander Schaaf of Rock Valley; brother, George Dorhout of Rock Valley, sister, Martha Goslinga of Orange City, IA; sister-in-laws, Johanna Dorhout and Lucille Dorhout both of Rock Valley; 14 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren.
Gert was preceded in death by her husband, William; brothers, Sam, Pete, Dick, and Clarence Dorhout; sisters, Ella Hoekman and Mary Van Kley.
