ROCK VALLEY MAN, WM. VAN ZANTEN DIES AFTER ATTACK
ROCK VALLEY--William Van Zanten, 50, died suddenly Tuesday morning following a heart attack [Tuesday of the previous week, July 27?]. He had worked in the field that afternoon and had visited at Ireton on Monday evening. Though suffering with high blood pressure, he seemed in usual health.
Born in Holland January 22, 1904, he came to this country at the age of 5 with his parents and located in Rock Valley. Later the family moved to a farm. He was married to Gertie Dorhouts on Feb. 14, 1928 and to this union four children were born. They farmed in this vicinity since their marriage.
He is survived by the four children, Bertha, Mrs. Gilbert Rozeboom of Pella, Ia., Johanna, Mrs. Duane Vander Schaaf of Rock Rapids, William, serving with the army in Germany, and Gerald, 18, at home, and four grandchildren. Also his father, Cornelius Van Zanten of Rock Valley, three brothers, John of Ireton, Tony and Cornelius, Jr., of Rock Valley, six sisters, Bessie, Mrs. Charles Kleinhuizen of Kalamazoo, Mich., Catherine, Mrs. Louis Toering of Pipestone, Christine, Mrs. Ellis Kooi of Sioux Center, Bertha, Mrs. Gerrit Brands of Rock Valley, Marie, Mrs. Louis Kollis of Inwood and Johanna of Rock Valley.
The family received word from William in Germany and he will be able to come home. The funeral will be held this week.

A shorter obituary in the Hawarden Independent (August 5, 1954) gives some variant information:
Ireton, Ia.--William Van Zanten, 50, of Rock Valley, died Tuesday night of last week [July 27] following a heart attack. He had visited relatives in Ireton the previous evening and worked in the field the day of his death, apparently in good health.
He was born in Holland January 22, 1904, and came to this country at the age of six. He was married to Miss Gertie Dorhout February 14, 1928, at the Lebanon church, northeast of Hawarden.
