Obituary: HAWARDEN, IOWA- John Anderberg, 87, formerly of Hawarden, Iowa died Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Fargo, North Dakota.
Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the American Lutheran Church in Hawarden with. Rev. Erma Wolf officiating. Burial will be in the Eden Cemetery at Hudson, South Dakota. Visitation will begin at noon Friday, with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.
John Jay Anderberg was born to Andrew and Juanita (Johnson) Anderberg on December 10, 1923 in Rock Valley Iowa. He graduated from Hudson High School, South Dakota and entered the US Army in 1943 serving with the 42nd Division, Co. L, the Rainbow Division, in the European Theatre. He was wounded in an artillery skirmish near Strasburg, Germany. After the field hospital he was in a body cast in Paris, France and recuperated in the 133rd hospital in England. In September of 1945 he traveled by hospital ship to Charlotte, N.C., on to Ft. Carson, CO., and was discharged with the rank of sergeant at Springfield, MO March 14, 1946. For his service in the Rhineland Theatre he received the Bronze Star, with battle stars, the American Campaign medal, the European-MidEastern-African Campaign medal with Bronze Star attachment, World War II Victory Medal and Expert Badge for the Carbine and Rifle and numerous other badges and awards.
Upon his return to South Dakota he married Darlene Dorothy Loe of Hudson on June 15, 1947. Together they raised five daughters: Darla (John) Joyner, Three Forks, MT., Clarice (Roger) Decker, Wapakoneta, Ohio; Candace (James) Helgeson, Devils Lake, ND, Rhonda (Curt) Rogers, Lakewood, CO., and Debra (Ronald) Weidell, Roseville, MN. He is survived by 11 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by Darlene, his wife of 58 years, brothers, Thomas and Reuben and his parents. Other brothers are Norman, Herbert, Arnold and Robert.
Dad attended Sioux Falls Business College and studied accounting. He began his career as a lumber yard manager in Alcester, S.D. He was a manager for Great Plains Lumber in Great Falls, MT., Bottineau, ND and for Schoeneman Brothers in Canton and Hawarden, Iowa. Before retiring completely he served as the Safety Director for GTA in St. Paul, MN. and owned his own small business.
Dad was a life long member (60 years) of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served as VFW Post Commander in Bottineau and District 3 Commander. In the North Dakota VFW he was Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff and a VFW National Aide de Camp. He was an invited member for the Order of Cooties in Minot. During his later years he lived in Devils Lake at Heartland Court and most recently at Rosewood on Broadway in Fargo, ND. His care by the VA made his later years possible and comfortable.
He was a member of the Men’s Club at Rosewood, the American Lutheran Church of Hawarden and a life member of the Lutheran Church.
