Dr. Robert C. Spaan, age 80, of Orange City, passed away on Monday, October 3, 2011, at The Abbey of Le Mars.

Interment will be at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City on Wednesday, October 5, at 11:00am.

Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Robert Cornelius was born on June 8, 1930, in Le Mars, the son of Neal and K. Theodora Spaan. He was raised in Orange City, where he graduated from the public high school and attended two years at Northwestern Junior College. He also graduated from the University of Iowa Dental College in Iowa City.

After college, he spent two years in the United States Air Force and then moved to San Francisco, California. There he was a successful dentist for many years, having several entertainment people as patients. In later years, he received a Doctorate in Philosophy from Stanford University in California. His world wide experiences included studying at the Jung Institute in Zurich, Switzerland, and teaching in a military academy in Beijing, China.

Survivors include his six children, eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a brother and his wife, James and Robin Spaan, of Orange City.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
