Sioux Center News, September 21, 1983

Muriel Esser, 79, of Hawarden, retired school teacher, died Wednesday in a Sioux City Hospital after a long illness.

Services were at 10 a.m., Saturday in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hawarden.

The Rev. William Carel officiated. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery. The rosary was recited at 9 p.m., Friday in the Dow Funeral Home.

Mrs. Esser, the former Muriel Kayanaugh, was born April 21, 1904, in Sprink, SD. She graduated from Vermillion (S.D.) High School, attended college at Springfield, SD, and graduated from Westmar College in LeMars. She taught for several years in Westfield and also in the Hawarden public schools, retiring in 1968.

She was married to Vernon Esser in 1934 in Hawarden. He died in 1981.

Mrs. Esser was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Mary's Guild and St. Teresa Circle. She was active in civic affairs in Hawarden, served a term as president of the Business and Professional Women and was an active member and past president of the Senior Citizens Organization.

Survivors include two sons, William of Ashland, Ore. and Terry of Berkeley, Calif., and three grandchildren.
