Mrs. Mary Scheider, age 90, of Orange City, passed away on Wednesday, September 28, 2011, at the Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.
There will be a memorial service on Saturday, October 1, at 11:00am, at the First Presbyterian Church in Hospers. The Rev. Dr. Brian Janssen will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a prayer service on Saturday, at 9:45am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Mary Edna was born on May 11, 1921, in Baltimore, Maryland, the daughter of Allan Hall and Mary Edna Elizabeth (Pritchard) Mettam. She was raised in Baltimore, where she graduated from high school and attended a secretarial school.
On December 5, 1942, she married Maurice George Scheider in Baltimore, where they continued to make their home. She was a secretary in physicians’ offices and also a nurse’s aide for the Red Cross during World War II. In September of 1988, they retired to Orange City. She became a resident of Happy Siesta in September of 2009.
Mrs. Scheider was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and of Phi Beta Kappa Sorority.
In Baltimore, she volunteered at hospitals and at Birthright, a crisis pregnancy agency. She also belonged to the Women’s Club there. In Orange City, she was active in the Gideons and volunteered at Bethany Christian Services and Hands Around the World.
She was raised near a racetrack, where she developed a love for horses, and she enjoyed going to beaches, especially in Hawaii.
Survivors include her husband of more than 68 years, "Maury"; two daughters, Laura Anne, and her husband, Fred Van Schepen; and Joyce Ellen Scheider, all of Orange City; two grandchildren, Amanda De Jong, of Orange City; and Private Second Class Marshall Van Schepen, stationed in Korea; two great-grandsons, Hunter and Everett De Jong; a brother and his wife, Allan and Ruth Mettam, of Baltimore; and a special nephew and his wife, Ronald and Carol Mettam.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother and his wife, Robert and Betty Mettam; and a special uncle, Edwin Pritchard.
