William "Billy" Elmitt, age 79, of Yuma, AZ, passed away Monday, October 19, 1998, after a very lengthy illness. Burial took place at Desert Lawn Park at Yuma.

William Elmitt was born and raised in Hawarden. He attended schools and excelled in football. He was quite popular and respected by young and old.

He enlisted in the Army and served overseas in North Africa and Italy with the 34th Infantry Division. In later years he was also assigned to Casablanca, Morocco, where he met a longtime friend, Raymond McCarthy, who was employed by the U.S. Air Force.

After retirement he established residence in Yuma, AZ. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a Shriner of the Seattle, Washington, District.

During the severe flood of 1926 the Elmitt residence at 704 H Street served as a rescue station for the many people flooded out from the 700 block of I Street and the surrounding area.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis, and son, William, of Yuma; and a daughter, Sue Alexander, of Bismark, ND.
