DEATH CLAIMS PIONEER WOMAN
Mrs. H. H. Elmitt Passed Away Last Thursday Evening
Was 71 Years Old and Had Lived in Hawarden 52 Years.--Leaves Husband and Five Children

Mrs. H. H. Elmitt, a pioneer resident of Hawarden, passed away at her home in the south part of town at 7 o'clock last Thursday evening [Aug. 26]. She had been ill most of the summer and at times her suffering was intense but she bore her pain unflinchingly.

Funeral services were held at the Ross Funeral Home at 1:30 Sunday afternoon with Rev. T. H. Harding of the Associated church officiating. The male quartette of the Associated church sang two hymns at the services. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery.

Catherine Staley was born at Elk Point, S.D., July 12, 1866, and grew up in that vicinity. She was united in marriage with Harry H. Elmitt in Hawarden 52 years ago and since that time has resided here and raised her family, who now reside at various places. Besides her aged husband she is survived by two daughters and three sons: Mrs. Mabel Madsen of Pocahontas, Iowa; Mrs. Anna Blair and William Elmitt of Hawarden; George Elmitt of Denison, Iowa, and Arthur Elmitt of Chicago. She also leaves two sisters and three brothers: Mrs. Rose Hoefert of Hartford, S.D.; Mrs. Ella Coldwell and Robert and Leonard Staley of Sioux Falls, and Will Staley of Beresford. There are also 9 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

She was a member of the Adventist church in Hawarden. She was a woman loved by all who knew her and she tried to live a devoted Christian life. She was ever ready to be of help and to be of service when and wherever she could. Her passing is a severe blow to her aged husband who has not enjoyed the best of health for some time.

Out of town relatives and friends who attended the services were Mr. and Mrs. Steffen Madsen and daughter Alta and sons, Robert and Leo, and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Madsen of Pocahontas; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Madsen and Floyd Dotson of Laurens; Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Coldwell and family and Leonard and Robert Staley of Sioux Falls; Mr. and Mrs. John Hoefert and daughter of Hartford, S.D.; Art and Lee McDonald of Vermillion; George Elmitt of Denison; Art Elmitt of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Nick Sinns and daughter and Miss Alice Williams of Sioux Rapids, and Oliver Boggess of Centerville.
