BOYDEN FARMER KILLED IN MINNESOTA ACCIDENT

Alex B. Walinga, 57 year old Boyden, Iowa farmer, was killed Friday evening [Sept. 21] in a two-car head on collision in Minnesota, about 5 miles east of St. James.

His widow, Ruby, 56, and a daughter, Mrs. Warren (Luella) Anfinson, 21, of Pierson, were both in serious condition at St. Joseph Hospital in Mankato, Minn. They were transferred there from a Madelia, Minnesota hospital. Mrs. Walinga suffered a fractured leg and Mrs. Anfinson a fractured arm and leg. Another daughter, Meribeth, 18, was not injured seriously in the accident.

The four family members were returning home from Mankato, where Meribeth graduated from nursing school, when the accident happened. They were passengers in a vehicle, driven by Mrs. Anfinson, which collided with a car driven by Brian Achterhoff, 19, of St. James.

Funeral services for Mr. Walinga were at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Vogelaar Funeral Home at George, Iowa. The Rev. Donald Loetz of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Sheldon officiated. Burial was in the Boyden Cemetery.

Mr. Walinga was born Jan. 16, 1916, at Sheldon and had lived in the Boyden area all his life. He married Ruby Catherine Selken, Jan. 16, 1948 at Lester, Iowa.

Survivors, in addition to his widow and two daughters, include 3 brothers - Clarence, Elmer and Kenneth; two sisters - Mrs. Mae Dugger and Mrs. Florence Cooper.
