John Vlotho Jr., 90, of Ireton died Thursday, August 14, in a hospital at Hawarden of brief illness. Services were at 1:30 p.m. Monday in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Ireton. The Rev. Paul Sieveking officiated. Burial was at Pleasant Hill Cemetery of Ireton. There was a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the Dow Funeral Home in Ireton.

Mr. Vlotho was born July 30, 1890, on a farm east of Ireton. He married Hattie Nanninga July 3, 1915, in Ireton. She died May 20, 1969. He was the oldest retired businessman in Ireton. He owned the Vlotho Auto Electric Shop and served as manager of the Ireton Electric Light and Power Co. He was general manager of the Ireton Rural Telephone Association until 1952. He then became an agent for the Farmers Mutual Insurance Association.Mr. Vlotho was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, Hawkeye Chapter 17 and was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. He served for 30 years as secretary of the Pleasant Hill Cemetery Association, retiring in 1973. He was honored for 50 years service with the Ireton Fire Department. He served several terms on the Ireton City Council and several terms as mayor.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Walter (Mildred) Struck of Ireton, Mrs. Alvin (Lorraine) Horstman of Spirit Lake, and Mrs. Dean (Cleone) Franken of Schaller; five grandchildren; one great grandchild; and one sister, Mrs. Lenora Reid of Ireton.
