Arthur E. De Jong, 71, of Hull died unexpectedly Wednesday, January 15, at the Sioux Center Community Hospital.
Services were at 10 A.M., Saturday, January 18, at First Reformed Church in Hull with the Rev. Gerald Vander Velde and Timothy Moermond officiating. Burial was in Hope Cemetery.
De Jong was born December 8, 1920, in Sioux Center, the son of Edward & Dena De Jong. He was raised on a farm near Perkins and served in the United States Navy during World War II. He married Edith M. Bonestroo at Hull, December 16, 1943. After the war they made their home in Hull where he was employed by the Hull Creamery. Since 1946 he had operated a store in Hull, which became De Jong and Vander Schaaf Hardware. He semi-retired in 1983.
He was a member of First Reformed Church were he served on the Consistory as an elder. He taught Sunday school and catechism classes and was a member of the Men's Brotherhood. He was active in the Hull community where he was the pitcher on the town softball team for many year. He was a member of Wegman-Koele Post 380, American Legion, and past president of the Business and Professional Club. For 35 years he was involved in the volunteer fire department. He was active in emergency medical services for 20 years. He was presented the Faith Bolks Citizen of the Year Award in 1984.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Larry of Sioux City, and Galen and Brian, both of Hull; a brother, Tom E. De Jong of Hull; a sister, Marilynn Boote of Hull; and seven grandchildren.
