September 25, 1917, Hull — June 24, 1992, Sioux City, IA.
Gerrit J. "Sonny" Vander Schaaf, 74, of Hull died Wednesday, June 24, 1992 at a Sioux City Hospital after a sudden illness.
Services were Saturday, June 27, 1992 at American Reformed Church in Hull with the Rev. Phillip Sneller officiating. Burial was in Hope Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion.
Vander Schaaf was born September 25, 1917, in Hull, the son of James and Dora (Te Slaa) Vander Schaaf. He was a lifelong resident of Hull. On June 19, 1941, he married Nelva De Koster at Hull. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. In earlier years, he was a country school teacher and was employed by Hymans & Sons Construction. For 35 years, he was in partnership with Arthur De Jong, operating De Jong and Vander Schaaf Hardware. He retired in 1983.
He was a member of American Reformed Church where he served on the consistory, was an elder and deacon and also served as Sunday school treasurer for many years.
He served on the Hull City Council from 1983 to 1992. He was a member of the Hull Community Betterment Corporation, Hull Industrial Development Corporation, Hope Cemetery Board of Directors,, and was past commander of Wegman-Koele American Legion Post.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Robert Wayne and Russell, both of Hull and Richard of San Diego, California; a daughter, Ida Evertse of Hull; and 12 grandchildren.
