Pioneer Of County Died Saturday
Mrs. John De Haan came here in 1879--six children survive

Mrs. John De Haan passed away at her home at Orange City Saturday, November 8, at two o'clock after a life duration of 71 years, ten months and fourteen days. She was a daughter of Garrit Van't Hof and was born in the Gelderland, The Netherlands, coming to the United States when seven years of age. She was born December 26, 1858. In the year of 1879, the family moved to the prairie of Sioux County and here she was married to Mr. John De Haan on April 3, 1894, the wedding taking place at Newkirk.

The children who survived their mother all prominent citizens of Sioux County, are as follows: Henry De Haan, Lou De Haan, Peter, Garrit, John, and Miss Dena Fonkert, Arie Fonkert, now deceased.

She is survived by a brother, Lou Van't Hof, and one sister, Mrs. John A. Mouw. A brother, Henry, is deceased.

Funeral services for the early settler were conducted at the First Reformed Church at Orange City, of which she was long a devoted member, on Tuesday, with the pastor, Rev. H. Colenbrander officiating.

The Democrat joins with the host of friends of the departed in sympathy with the bereaved family, in the loss of a devoted mother. She was prominent in the work of her church and her counsel and aid will be sorely missed.
