Obituary: Hawarden, Iowa- Jeanette Buffington, 87, of Hawarden, died Monday, February 21, 2011 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden.
Funeral Service will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Hawarden Community Church with Rev. Doug Baker officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. followed by visitation with the family until 8:30 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Jeanette Buffington was born February 25, 1923 in Sioux County, north of Orange City, Iowa, the daughter of Gerrit and Alice (Hoogland) DeVries. She married Burdette Buffington on June 15, 1949 in Orange City. They lived in Rock Valley until moving to a farm east of Hawarden in 1952. Burdette died April 23, 1977. Jeanette remained living on the farm until moving into Hawarden 8 years ago.
She was a member of the Hawarden Community Church and was the contact person for their prayer chain. She enjoyed doing word search books, gardening, her flowers and especially liked crocheting, making many afghans and name panels for others.
Survivors include her four children, Alvin and wife Char of Upland, California, Earl and wife Sandy of Hawarden, Sandy Buffington-Lloyd of Sheldon, Iowa and Valerie and husband Randy Kor of Lynd, Minnesota; 6 siblings, Alida Remes of Denver, Colorado, George and Sadie De Vries of Round Lake, Minnesota, Emma DeJoode of Stanchfield, Minnesota, Alfred and Evelyn DeVries of Sioux Center, Iowa, Harold and Joyce DeVries of Hull, Iowa and LeRoy and Betty DeVries of Denver, Colorado; a brother-in-law, Warney and Christine Buffington of Sheldon, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandsons.
Jeanette was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Joyce; and 2 brothers-in-law, Milton Remes and Tony DeJoode.
