Early Resident Here Succumbs
Was Born in Calliope in 1877 And Graduated from High School There; Survivors Include Local Woman
Mrs. A; C. Green of Hawarden receivedword that her sister, Mrs. Effie Lawrence, 73, of Santa Marie, Calif., died Tuesday at her home following a stroke. Mrs. Lawrence had not been well for about a year but more recently had seemed improved.
Effie Patterson, one of the early residents of Hawarden, was born in Calliope October 20, 1877. She was one of five daughters in a family.
She was graduuated from Calliope high school and later attended the University of South Dakota at Vermillion.
During her early years she was engaged in teaching school in Hawarden and vicinity. Later she went west and was married to William
Lawrence at Ontario, Ore.
A number of years ago the family moved to California and at one time she served as postmistress at Burbank, Calif. She was always active in educational work and taught in California and later served as a substitute
teacher. Until recently she engaged in private tutoring.
Her husband died a number of years ago. She is survived by two children, Mrs. Dorothy Phelps and Wayne Lavrence, both of Santa Maria, and two
Bisters, Mrs. Green of Hawarden and Mrs. Carrie Buchanan of Ames, Iowa.
