Dr. Cornelius Maris, 82, longtime Sanborn physician, died Tuesday, March 12, in a hospital in Sheldon after a brief illness. Services were at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 15, in St Andrews United Methodist Church in Sanborn. The Rev. Leon Wallace officiated. Burial was in Roseland Cemetery under the direction of the Sanborn Funeral Home. Mr. Maris was born Oct. 23, 1902, rural Hull. He was raised in northwest Iowa, attended school through 11th grade at Boyden and completed high school at Orange City. He did undergraduate work at the University of Iowa and continued his education at the University of Iowa Medical School. He served a one-year internship at Lyingin Hospital at Chicago.
He married Vernice Peterson April 16, 1927, at Laurens. He began his medical practice in Sioux Center in 1928 and moved to Sanborn in 1929 where he practiced until his retirement Feb. 11, 1985. They lived in Iowa City, Sioux Center and Sanborn.
Mr. Maris was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church, Sanborn Municipal Light Board, Board of Prairie View Leasing Corp., Sanborn
Development Inc., Sanborn Housing Inc., 10-20 Club and was a U.S. Weather Observer since 1966.
He was a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, American Medical Association, Iowa Medical Association, American Association of Railroad Surgeons, serving as physician and surgeon for the Milwaukee Railroad and was a staff member of the Sheldon Hospital. In 1979 he was presented a plaque for life membership in the Iowa Medical Society.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Cornelius of Sanborn; and three grandchildren.
