From the Hawarden Independent April 11, 1940
Was 74 years old and a long time resident and business man of this city and community.
Merritt Miller, an almost lifelong resident of this city and community, passed away about 4 o'clock Wednesday morning at the county home near Orange City where he had been cared for the past several months. His death was due to a stroke and complicaitons. He had been in failing health for a number of years. Last summer he was obliged to submit to an operation for the removal of one eye and he failed rapidly after this ordeal and became almost helpless last fall.
Funeral services will be held at the Barnard Funeral Home in this city at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon with Rev. Robert F. Chapler, pastor of the Methodist church in charge. Interment will be in Grace Hill cemetery.
Merritt Miller was born at Winterset, IA, Sept 26, 1865, so was past 74 years of age at the time of his death. He came to Callipe with his parents in 1869, when only 4 years of age, and grew to manhood on a farm northwest of here. After leaving the farm he followed the trade of a painter and paper hanger in Hawarden for many years.
About 1916 he engaged in the farm implement business here, purchasing the business of Steel & Metcalf, and continued in his business until two or theree years ago. For several years he also conducted a branch implement business at Primghar.
He was untied in marriage with Mrs. Pearl Janes in Sioux City on April 10, 1910, and his death occurred on their 30th wedding anniversary. Two sons were born to them and the family made their home in Hawarden continously until October 1939, when they left of California.
Subsequently Mr. Miller made a couple of trips back to Hawarden to look after business affairs and to seek medical attention and it was on this trip here last fall that his health became so impaired that he was unable to return to California to join his family.
He is survived by his wife and two sons, Donald and Merritt Miller Jr., all of San Fernando, CA, and two step children, Mrs. Jay McAninch of LeMars and Thorp Janes of Burbank CA. He also leaves three brothers, Judd Miller of Frazier MT, Claude Miller of Melstone MT, and John Miller of Onida SD and one sister, Mrs. Julia Shipley of Dickinson ND.
(Rest of the obit states his attributes as a citizen of Hawarden...)
