Gerald Dean Frerich,61, of Akron, died August 2, 2003 at his home following a long fight with cancer. A Memorial service was held Aug. 6 at St. John Lutheran Church, rural Akron, with the Rev. William Kallestad officiating. Hoschler American Legion Post #186 of Akron did a graveside service.

Gerald Frerich was born July 1, 1942 in Hawarden, the son of Edwin H. and Ella Marie(Beeck)Frerichs. He graduated from Akron High School and attended WIT for welding and Ag business. He served in the Army National Guard for two years and then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served in Vietnam from 1965 to 1970. On Jan. 4, 1969 he married Mary Jean Frederick at Central Bapist Church in Sioux City. He farmed in the Akron area and was employed as a welder for Load King in Elk Point. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and the Hoschler American Legion Post #186.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Jean; two sons, Gerald Frerichs, Jr. and Edwin Frerichs, both of Alcester; daughter Theresa Schiefen of Hawarden; mother Ella Frerichs of Akron;brother Randy Frerichs of Akron; sister Pat Hill of Excelsoir Spring, MO.; and two grandchildren
