Helen Janice De Groot, 61, passed away Monday, February 7, 2011 at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 11 at First Christian Reformec Church, Sioux Falls, SD. Burial will take place at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Hope Cemetery, Hull, IA. Visitation will be Thursday from 2-8 p.m., with family present from 6-8 p.m., at Heritage Funeral Home.
Helen was born on October 27, 1949 to Hubert and Martha Slegers in Downey, CA. She spent her younger years on dairies in Anaheim and Chino, CA. graduating from Ontario Christian High School. She attended Dordt College from 1967-1971, where she met and married Larry De Groot on August 22, 1969 Upon graduating, she began a long career of teaching Christian schools at Lebanon, Sioux Center, and Sanborn, IA. Most of her teaching career was in the 4th grade at Hull, Iowa Christian School. When Larry and Helen relocated to Sioux Falls, she spent many happy hours substitute teaching at Sioux Falls Christian. She loved teaching, and she loved children. Larry and Helen traveled extensively, enjoying winters in Mexico, but her most valued time was with her kids, whether it be on the boat or in the mall.
She is preceded in death by a son, Michael; her parents, Hubert and Martha Slegers; and a brother, George.
She is survived by her husband, Larry; three children, Jonathan (Misty, Max and Izzy), Jason (Abby and Harper), and daughter Joanna; three brothers, Rich, Gerard, and John; and three sisters, Joan, Rita, and Barbara, and their families.
