SNOW STORM IS CAUSE OF DEATH OF IRETON MAN

Funeral services for Martin Kading, 59, who was found dead in a snow-filled ditch Sunday morning [Feb. 19] about 400 yards from his snow-bound car two miles west of Ireton on a county road, were held Tuesday at 1:30 at the Satterlee Funeral home and at 2 o'clock at St. John's Lutheran church four miles east of Ireton.

Rev. Paul Friedrich officiated with burial in the church cemetery. Casket bearers were Dick Burgers, Herb Vander Hamm, Harold Toenjes, Chris Westergard, H. M. Brown and Louis Goodmanson.

The county medical examiner, Dr. R. H. Hasenbroek of Orange City, said Mr. Kading died of coronary thrombosis. Sheriff Harry Dykstra, who also investigated, said the Kading car evidently left the road some time during the night and became stuck in deep snow in the ditch. Mr. Kading evidently tried to drive it out and failed, so followed a fence row about 400 years seeking a shallow place in the snow to cross the ditch amd get back to the road. He did try to cross at a point where the snow was three or four feet deep and in the process suffered the fatal heart attack.

Mr. Kading, a bachelor born November 10, 1901, at Cesey[Casey], Iowa, made his home with a married brother, Paul, with whom he was in an extensive cattle feeding operation. Weighing over 200 pounds and 5 feet, 2 inches tall, he had farmed in the Ireton vicinity for many years and was well known in the vicinity.

Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Edna Vander Hamm of Ireton and Mrs. Margarite Heidbrink of Le Mars; two brothers, Paul and Edward of Ireton; two step-sisters, Mrs. Reiner Eilts of Le Mars and Mrs. Arthur Salberg of Long Beach, Calif., and one step-brother, Gustave Vlotho of Le Mars.

A similar obit was published in the Sioux Center News, Feb. 23, 1961. It adds that he was the son of the late Mrs. Henry Vlotho, sr., and that he moved with his parents to a farm south east of Ireton in 1914.

A shorter obit was published in the Sioux County Capital, Feb. 23, 1961.

News notes in Sioux county newspapers of October 1931 report on him having his right arm amputated after catching it in a corn picking machine.
