From the Hawarden Independent, May 8, 1913:

The following obituary notice of Mrs. Mary Callopy appeared in the Jewell, Iowa, Record last week:

"Mrs. Mary Callopy of Jewell, Iowa, died Sunday morning at 7 o'clock, April 27, 1913. She had been in poor health for some time, and gradually grew weaker. The cause of death was bronchitis. Mrs. Callopy was well known in Hamilton county, and a host of friends join in sympathy with the relatives in their bereavement.

"Her maiden name was Mary Doyle, and she was born in Limerick county, Ireland, March 20, 1848, and at the age of 18 years she came to New York City, where a year later she was married to Michael Callopy, at the Paulists Fathers church. They came to Davenport, Iowa, 45 years ago, and she has resided continuously in Hamilton county for more than 25 years.

"Eight children were born to them of which four are living, namely, John T. Callopy of Hawarden, Iowa, William S. Callopy of Minneapolis, J. F. Callopy of Winnipeg, Canada, and Margaret Fusselmen of Jewell. Her husband, Michael Callopy, died December 28, 1900.

"Mrs. Callopy was buried at Des Moines. Funeral services were held at the residence Monday afternoon, and the remains taken on the afternoon passenger to Des Moines where on Tuesday morning a Requiem Mass was held at St. Ambrose Church, and the body laid away in the family lot in St. Ambrose cemetery.

"The death of Mrs. Callopy removes from this community a remarkable woman. She had a wide knowledge of the public questions and events of her time, and there are few people who could discuss so intelligently current topics as she could. She was a constant reader in later life, and acquired a fund of information and took a keen interest in every question of importance in either state or nation.

"Besides possessing a well informed mind, she had a happy and cheerful disposition. She had the faculty of being able to make and hold friends. There was something in the warm handshake, the kindly voice, the welcome look in her eyes, that made a person feel glad of her acquaintance, and it was a genuine pleasure to sit and talk with her. Good natured, a refined wit, amiable and kind-hearted, she had a strong character and the soul of a true woman. While her life has been burdened with the cares, labor and self-sacrifice that must come into every home, yet it has been a full, complete and successful life. Gifted with all the attributes of a loving mother and a true friend, Mrs. Callopy has done her work well, and along the journey of life she has scattered kind words and kind acts that have endeared her memory to all that knew her."
