Mrs. Elnora McGilvra, age 101, of Maurice, passed away on Tuesday, October 19, 2010, at the Orange City Area Health System Long Term Care Facility.

There will be a memorial service on Sunday, October 24, at 2:30pm, at the First Reformed Church in Maurice. The Rev. Mark Haverdink will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a prayer service on Sunday, at 1:15pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Visitation with the family will be after 12:30pm on Sunday at the funeral home.

Elnora Eliza was born on April 4, 1909, in rural Maurice, the daughter of William H. and Anna (Langerack) De Jager. She was raised at Maurice, where she attended country school through the eighth grade. She then attended the Maurice High School, but graduated from the Orange City High School. She also attended Central College in Pella for two years and summer school in Boulder, Colorado.

She made her home in Maurice and taught in country schools in northwest Iowa for ten years. She then was a teacher in Boyden for three years and in Sioux Center for 33 years.

On August 14, 1954, Elnora married Harold George McGilvra in Maurice. In August of 1999, they moved to the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City. Mr. McGilvra passed away on December 16, 1999, in Orange City. In October of 2003, she transferred to the Long Term Care Facility.

Mrs. McGilvra was a member of the First Reformed Church, where she attended Ladies Aid and sang in the choir. She gave piano lessons and enjoyed doing handwork, knitting Afghans and making dish cloths.

Survivors include her sister, Gladys Mulder, of Orange City; a sister-in-law, Marian McGilvra, of Pella; four nephews and two nieces and their spouses, Russell and Sharon Hoekstra, of Bellflower, California; Harold and Gladys Hoekstra, of Orange City; Glenda and John Van Veldhuizen, of Sioux City; Larry and Gloria Hoekstra, of Orange City; Gary and Marlene Heerde, of Sheldon; and Randy and Ruth Hoekstra, of Maurice; 17 grand-nephews and grand-nieces, and 34 great-grand-nephews and great-grand-nieces.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Jake P. Hoekstra and Alvin Mulder.
