Funeral service for William J.Ruttan,72, former Hawarden business man who died at San Diego, Calif., Saturday after a long illness, were scheduled to be held in a Catholic church in San Diego with burial in Holly Cross cemetery at San Diego.

Mr. Ruttan was born March 31, 1889, near Ireton. He spent his early years on a farm near Hawarden and later, with his brother Wesley (Rats)Ruttan farmed on the Wasser place 3-1/2 miles south of town.

He married Grace Gallagher of rural Alcester, a registered nurse at the Catholic church in Beresford.For a time Mr. Ruttan worked here as an electician and later erected and operated a locker plant on Central avenue, residing in the adjoining house which was formerly occupied by his parents. In 1958 the Ruttans moved to Sacramento, Calif., and later to San Diego where she is employed as a nurse.

He was preceded in death by his parents and the one brother who resided in Los Angeles at the time of his death.

Survivors include the widow; two sons, William of Chicago and Jack, a Lieutenant in the armed forces in Texas and one grandchild. Mr. Ruttan was a cousin of Tom Kelley of Hawarden and a brother-in-law of Jim Gallagher of Alcester
