Obituary: Hawarden, Iowa- Peter A. Anderson, 84, of Hawarden, died Monday, November 1, 2010 at his residence following a short battle with cancer.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Hawarden with Pastor Barb Joy officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden with Military Rites conducted by the VFW and American Legion of Hawarden. Visitation will begin at noon Thursday, with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Peter August Anderson was born near McNally, Iowa on September 5, 1926 to Roy and Mattie (Krusen) Anderson. They later moved south of Hawarden where he went to school about ½ mile from home. He enlisted in the US Navy at age 17 on August 23, 1944, and served in the Philippines, Guam, and Japan, being honorably discharged on May 24, 1946.
Peter married Lydia Buchmann on September 24, 1946. He worked for several area farmers until farming for himself northwest of Chatsworth for 24 years. He was self employed as a gravel truck driver until 1988, when he began driving for his son James until retiring in 2005.
He loved going fishing, doing puzzles, and reading western books. His children and grandchildren were very special to him.
Survivors include his wife, Lydia; children, Joan and husband Chuck Smith of Hawarden, Jim and wife Kristi Anderson of Hawarden, Kathy and husband Wayne Heuer of Ireton, Iowa, and John and wife Connie Anderson of Hawarden; 8 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; sister, Myrtle Mae Harvey of Hawarden; brother, Frank and wife Mary Anderson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; sister-in-law, Irene Anderson of Centerville, Iowa; and lots of nephews and nieces.
Peter was preceded in death by a sister, Esther Hamilton; brothers, Carl, George, and Lester; and grandson, Jason Anderson.
