August Nilson Dies at Age 85

Funeral services for August W.Nilson,85,father of Sigmund Nilson of Hawarden, who died at the Akron hospital last Thursday following a three month illness were held at Union Creek Lutheran church Monday afternoon. Rev. David Roy officiating with burial in Riverside cemetery.

Casket bearers included Quenton Nilson, Earl Newman, Wendall Nilson, Larry Nilson, Tuney Schreur and Arden Nilson.

August Waldemar Nilson was born August 16, 1876 in Big Springs township of Union county, South Dakota. His parents were amoung the earliest settlers on a homestead claim on which they endured the many hardships of pioneer life. In 1882 they settled on a farm in Sioux Valley township which remained the home of August Nilson the remainder of his life.

He was a lifelong member of the Union Creek Lutheran church. He married Miss Ruth Johnson September 10, 1902. She died on March 19, 1929.

Survivors include one son Sigmund, who farms near Hawarden; two daughters, Mrs. Iszetta Jones of Decatur, Ill. and Mrs. Arlus Deaton, who with her husband, Matthew, made her home with him since March 1, 1959to help care for him in his advanced age; seven grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren
