Wilbert Oldenkamp August 27, 1922 - October 9, 2010
Mr. Wilbert Oldenkamp, age 88, of Hospers, passed away on Saturday, October 9, 2010, at the St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Tuesday, October 12, at 1:00pm, at the First Presbyterian Church in Hospers, with the Rev. Dr. Brian Janssen officiating. Interment will follow at the Hospers Cemetery, with military rites by the Reuter American Legion Post of Hospers. Visitation will be after 5:00pm on Monday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hospers, and the hour before the service on Tuesday at the church.
The son of Gerrit and Anna (Verdoorn) Oldenkamp, he was born on August 27, 1922, in Hospers. He received his education at the Hospers Public School. Following eighth grade, at age 13, he left school and began helping his father in the scrap iron and metal business. He founded Oldenkamp Salvage and actively worked until age 85. He also co-owned One Stop Service with his brother, Edward. On April 2, 1942, "Whip" married Dorothy Roetman in Hospers. To this union, Connie Jean was born on July 12, 1948. Dorothy went to her heavenly home on March 29, 1979, in Sheldon. On July 12, 1996, he married Elizabeth Collins in Elk Point, South Dakota. He enlisted in the United States Army during World War II, where he served in the Pacific Theatre from 1943 to 1946. Activities he enjoyed included bowling, bingo, card playing with his Hospers buddies, TV sports, family events, and Betti's companionship. He was a 45 year member of the Hospers Presbyterian Church and also held memberships in the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the American Legion. Survivors include his loving wife of fourteen years, Betti, of Spencer; a daughter, Connie Roghair (Roland), of Badger; two grandsons, R. Dean (Jenny), of Ankeny, and Robert (Pei-fen) of Iowa City; seven great-grandchildren, Jasmine, Marissa, Ariel, Kara, Tyler, Aurora, and Jade; two brothers, Jerry (Cinda Kaye) of Lakeland, Florida, and Don (Erin) of Paullina; two sisters, Anna Maye Jungers, of Richfield, Minnesota, and Mary Jane Barry (John), of Mesa, Arizona; a sister-in-law, Marcia Oldenkamp, of Hospers; a step-son, Dan Weston of Spencer; and six step-daughters, Cheryl (John) Law, of Lakewood, Colorado, Kathi (Mike) Benner, of Sanborn, Karin (Tom) Jungers, of Granville, Pat Tremmel (Jim), of Milford, Nebraska, Chris (Rick) Vander Berg, of Okoboji, and Paula Petersen (Chuck), of Glenwood, Minnesota. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Edward, and two sisters, Gertrude Herbert and Jeanette Peters. Source: Oolman Funeral Homes obit.
