DOON WOMAN IS KILLED AT NEWTON

Mrs. Joann Evelyn Van Veldhuizen, 28, of Doon died in a few minutes after the car in which she was riding jammed under the rear left duals of a semi-truck at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, on Interstate Highway 80, two miles east of Newton. Mrs. Van Veldhuizen suffered fatal head injuries in the accident.

Her husband, Arthur, also 28, suffered broken ribs and head injuries, and their son, Joseph, 3, suffered undetermined head injuries. Both were taken to the Newton hospital.

According to Jasper County Deputy Sheriff James Verwers, one of the investigating officers, the Van Veldhuizen car, a 1959 Chevrolet, was traveling west on the highway when, for some undetermined reason, it crashed into the truck's duals. The car was considered a total loss. The Van Veldhuizens were returning home from Iowa City, where they had gone for treatment of their son, according to the deputy sheriff.

Robert D. Curtis, of Denver, Colo., driver of the truck, was not injured. The truck, owned by the J. B. Montgomery Co. of Denver, sustained an estimated $1,000 damage to the duals and the trailer. The Iowa Highway Patrol covered the accident.

In addition to her husband and son, Mrs. Van Veldhuizen is survived by a daughter, Caralee, 5 (who is with relatives of Mr. Van Veldhuizen); her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Van Ravenhorst of Sioux Center; a brother, Spec. 4 Arthur D. Van Ravenhorst, who is stationed in Vietnam and is expected to return for the funeral; and three sisters, Harriet, Mrs. Leonard Roskam of Hawarden, Delores, Mrs. Clifford Te Slaa of Hull, and Janice, Mrs. John Van Veldhuizen of Steen, Minn.

Mr. Van Veldhuizen's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Van Veldhuizen of Rock Rapids, were in Newton Wednesday with their son and grandson.
