Miss Gertrude Burke died Saturday evening [April 23] at 7:30 o'clock at the McAllister-Meyer hospital in this city of heart lesion, following a long illness. She took sick several years ago and had been in poor health practically all of the time since then until the time of her death. She went to Los Angeles in the hope of finding a cure in that climate, and had also sought relief at Rochester, Minn., in Chicago, Sheldon and elsewhere. Last year it was thought that she was recovering and she was feeling much better in health, but she began to grow worse about nine weeks ago. Since that time she had been confined to her bed at the home of her aunt, Mrs. Minnie Johnson, until a week before her death when she was taken to the hospital so that she might receive the best of care.

Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock at the Catholic church, Rev. Fr. Bradley officiating. She was buried in the Catholic cemetery beside her father and mother, who passed away when she was but a child.

Gertrude Burke was born Aug. 31, 1899, at Hudson, S.D., and died April 23, 1921, at the age of 21 years, 7 months and 22 days. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Burke Jr., her mother passing away 20 years ago and her father 17 years ago. The deceased went to school at Hudson in her childhood, and later at Hawarden at St. Mary's school, during which time she made her home with her aunt, Mrs. Minnie Johnson. She graduated from St. Mary's school in 1918, and later attended school at Sinsinawa Mound Academy at Sinsinawa, Wis.

Gertrude Burke, through all her years of suffering and ill health, always kept her cheery disposition and smile which had won her the love of so many Hawarden people. She accepted death unflinchingly and with unwavering faith. Her passing is mourned not only by her close relatives, but is deeply felt by the community as a whole. There are left to mourn her death three brothers, Raymond and T. D. both of Aberdeen, S.D., Bryan of Chicago, and one sister, Mrs. A. H. Nolan of Madison, S.D., also her aunt, Mrs. Minnie Johnson, with whom the deceased lived for many years, her aunt, Mrs. M. C. Callan, and uncle, Will Burke, all of Hawarden.

Other relatives and friends who were present at the funeral were her aunts, Mrs. L. N. Wilsey and Mrs. Mary Mullin of Sheldon; her aunt, Mrs. Robt. Haymen, and her cousin, Mrs. Wm. Thomas of Sioux City; Dr. and Mrs. A. T. Bailey and Mrs. Fred Weber of Sioux City; Jack Burke of Worthing, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. H. Wilsey of Sheldon; Mrs. L. R. Wasmer and daughter, Miss Marie and Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Cooper of LeMars; and Miss Lucille Johnson who is attending school at Sinsinawa, Wis. There were also a number of old friends from Hudson and vicinity present at the funeral services. The Independent wishes to extend deepest sympathy to the saddened brothers and sisters and other relatives in their great sorrow.
