Death of Grandma Canan

Mrs. Martha H. Canan died at three o'clock Monday morning [Jan. 28] at the home of her brother-in-law, H. I. Trump, at the age of 69 years, 7 months and 20 days. Her health had been failing for some time and her death, while quite sudden, was not unexpected by the friends about. Her daughter, Miss Lulu Canan, was at her bedside when the final summons came. Funeral services will be held from the home at 2 o'clock this afternoon and interment will be made in Grace Hill cemetery. Rev. A. M. McIntosh, pastor of the Presbyterian church, will conduct the funeral services.

Martha Heister was born in Mercer county, Pa., June 8, 1848. She was united in marriage to John Lee Canan at Andrew, Iowa, Oct. 26, 1870. To this union four children were born, Ella, Luella, Grace and Charles Lee. Ella died in infancy. Grace, now Mrs. P. J. Weber, resides at Bellevue, Iowa, Luella in Hawarden and Charles Lee at Sturgis, S.D. The husband died at Bellevue, Iowa, Feb. 2, 1892.

Shortly after the death of her husband, in company with her daughter Luella, she came to Hawarden to make her home with her brother-in-law and has since resided here. While her acquaintance here was limited, she was loved and esteemed by all who knew her. She was a consistent Christian woman and was a member of the Presbyterian church of Bellevue, Iowa.

Her daughter and husband Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Weber of Bellevue, Iowa, came Monday evening to be present at the funeral.
