Obituary: Hawarden, Iowa- Dreaka Van Ballegooyen, 82, of Hawarden, died Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Hawarden Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Tom Van Engen officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Friday, with the family present from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the church. The Porter Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Dreaka Van Ballegooyen was born November 18, 1927 near Lebanon, Iowa, the daughter of John and Gertie (Vander Lugt) Kooi. She attended rural school and married Henry Van Ballegooyen February 10, 1948 in Lebanon. They farmed near Hull, Iowa until moving to a farm near Alcester, South Dakota in the spring of 1965. They moved into Hawarden in January of 1982. Dreaka cared for the elderly in their homes for many years. They made their home in Bee Hive Homes for a year and a half before moving into Hillcrest Health Care Center in October of 2009.
Henry died November 7, 2009. Dreaka was a member of the Hawarden Christian Reformed Church. She enjoyed many outdoor activities including gardening and having family fun in the swimming pool. Dreaka also liked playing the piano, cooking, and canning.
She is survived by her four children, Harv Van Ballegooyen and wife Marylee of Alcester, Carol Ver Hoeven and husband Duane of Hawarden, David Van Ballegooyen and wife Sandi of Beresford, South Dakota, and Audrey Groen and husband Don of George, Iowa; sister, Grace Harthoorn of Rock Valley, Iowa; four brothers, Randall Kooi of Edgerton, Minnesota, Bill Kooi and wife Gert of Orange City, Iowa, Pete Kooi and wife Nella of Inwood, Iowa, and Elmer Kooi and wife Karen of Sioux Center, Iowa; her friend, cousin and sister-in-law, Grada Van Ballegooyen of Hawarden; 11 grandchildren, Joe Van Ballegooyen, Kenny Van Ballegooyen, Jennifer Morrell, Anna Simonsen, Carey Borchers, Kelly Ver Hoeven, Rob Van Ballegooyen, Ryan Van Ballegooyen, Kristen Groen, Kayla Camp, and Jake Groen; 19 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Dreaka was preceded in death by her parents; husband Henry; newborn twin boys; 2 brothers-in-law; and 2 sisters-in-law.
