Leo Schiefen, 78, of Hawarden, died Sunday (Feb. 18, 1990) in the Hawarden Community Hospital after a long illness.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hawarden. The Rev. Edmond Adams officiated. Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery, under direction of the Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden.

Mr. Schiefen was born March 30, 1911, northeast of Hawarden. He worked on his parents farm until his marriage to Alice Ronan, March 25, 1940, at Hawarden. The couple farmed in the Big Springs area south of Alcester, S.D. In 1942 they farmed near Le Mars with a brother for one year. They returned to the Big Springs area where they farmed. In 1966 they moved into Alcester and he continued to farm until 1979, when he retired because of poor health. In May 1979 they moved to Hawarden. He was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Catholic church in Hawarden, except for one year.

Survivors include his wife, Alice; a brother, Francis of Le Mars; three sisters, Ann Vogelzang and Mrs. Lawrence (Josephine) Muth, both of Hawarden and Esther Borchers of rural Akron.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Hattie (Pollock) Schiefen; four brothers, William in infancy and Herman, Ted, and Leonard; and a sister, Mary
Majeres.
