Donald H. McPherson, 66, of Hawarden, Iowa died Tuesday, July 22, 1997 at his residence following a brief illness of colon cancer. His wish was to have his casket closed.
Services were held Saturday, July 26, 1997 at American Lutheran Church, Hawarden,mIowa, with the Rev. Karla Kirkeby officiating. Music was "Rock of Ages" and "How Great Thou Art" sung by Gary Tucker, and "Blest be the Tie That Binds," "Amazing Grace." and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives," sung by the. congregation. Alice Waterman accompanied on the organ. Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery, Hawarden, Iowa with Military Graveside Rites conducted by Hoschler American Legion Post #186. Schroeder Funeral Home, Akron, Iowa, was in charge of arrangements;
Casketbearers were Ken Boyd, John Dirks, John Ziniel, Stan Rolfes, Jim Harvey and . Gene Waag. Honorary casketbearers were Denny McMillan, Judy Scott, Ronald Harvey, Gary McPherson, Cindy Penning, Rick McPherson, Debbie Gregerson, Bev Kooi.
Mr. McPherson was born May 14, 1931, in Hawarden, Iowa, the son of Willie J. and Jessie (Jager) McPherson. He attended school in Hawarden and graduated from Hawarden High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict from 1951- 1955, serving a two year tour in Okinawa. He married Vivian Stewart May 7, 1954, in Sonoma, CA.
Don worked for the U.S. Navy in civil service in California for ten years. He was a rural letter carrier, and owned and operated the McPherson Variety Store in Akron for many years. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran church. Don enjoyed dancing, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family. He was a member of the Akron Commercial Club, Masons. Shrine (past president Big Sioux Shrine Club for two years), and American Legion.
Survivors Include his wife, Vivian: three daughters: Dawn and her husband Clint McKee of Hawarden, Karen and her husband Bill Robak of Washington, IA, Nancy McPherson of Minneapolis, MN; two sons, David and his friend Aubury of MA and Mark of San Francisco, CA; three grandchildren, Ellyn and Tori McKee and
Morgan Nancy McPherson; five brothers and their wives, Jim and Jeanette, Mike and Darlene, Ray and Barb, Bruce and Darlene all of Hawarden, and Fred and Sharon of Fort Dodge, IA; two sisters and their husbands, Genevieve and Elmer McMillan of Hawarden, -and. Alma and Pitts DeJong of Remsen, LA; many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law Dorothy arid Bill Harvey: his mother-in-law; two brothers: and one sister in infancy.
