Margaret C. Goergen, 94 years old, of Granville, IA died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2010, at Sanford Sheldon Hospital in Sheldon, IA.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Aug. 27, 2010, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Granville with Rev. Richard Ball officiating. Burial will be in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Granville. Visitation will be anytime after 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010. There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. all at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville.
Margaret was born on Aug. 2, 1916, in rural Granvillle, IA, the daughter of John P. and Elizabeth (Hentges) Kraus. She was raised in the Granvillle area and received her education at St. Joseph Catholic School in Granville.
On Sept. 14, 1938, she married Joseph N. Goergen at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville. They farmed in the Granville area until retiring on the farm in 1984 and in June of l986 they moved into Granville. Joseph died Nov. 21, 1996. She had been a resident of Fieldcrest Assisted Living in Sheldon since Dec. 5, 2009.
Margaret was a life long member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the church guild and a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters since 1937. She was a former member of the Catholic Daughters of America and the Confraternity of Christian Mothers. She enjoyed crocheting afghans and playing cards, her favorite being pinochle. Yatze was a favorite game with grandkids when they were young. Some favorite TV programs were The Wheel of Fortune, Lawrence Welk, of course the Markets and then ETWN every evening to say the rosary with Mother Angelica. The rosary was her favorite prayer and she said many rosaries for anyone in need of prayer and especially her family. Cooking she loved and she had a large collection of favorite cookbooks and simply enjoyed looking at them sometimes to find something new or different to try because she knew the author was a good cook!!
Survivors include: two daughters, Germaine "Gerri" O’Donnell of Sioux City, IA and Eileen and her husband Bernie Krzywada of Boca Raton, FL; two sons and their wives, Roger and Lotus of Granville, IA and Glenn and Denise of Milwaukee, WI; eleven grandchildren, Barry O’Donnell of Tucson, AZ, Rhonda and her husband Paul Gruber of Jacksonville, FL, Robin and her husband Jon Tagatz of Nashville, TN, Andrea and her husband James Johnson of Lewisville, TX, Jeff and Erika Goergen both of Omaha, NE, Scott and his wife Tara Callenius of Lake Worth, FL, Jennifer and her husband Eric Sommer of Orlando, FL, Emily Goergen of New York, NY, Laura and Joe Goergen both of Milwaukee, WI.; eleven great-grandchildren, Keegan O’Donnell, Raegan, Gannon and Karson Gruber, Riley and Jack Tagatz, Gage and Ryder Callenius, Jackson, Davis and Ryann Sommer.
She was preceded in death by, her parents, a brother Leo Kraus and a son-in-law, Joe O’Donnell.
