From the Alton Democrat of Jun 3, 1893 Hospers Happenings.
Died, Mary 29th Gerrit Nieuwenhuis. He had been sick all fall and winter with typhoid fever, and about two weeks ago he contracted a slight cold which rapidly developed into lung fever. All that human aid could do was done, but his system being depleted by his long illness, could not throw off the cold and he passed away to the better land beyond. He was an exemplary young man and respected by all. The family have the sympathy of the entire community in their great affliction. The funeral was held at one o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Presbyterian church, and the remains were followed by a large concurese of sorrwoing friends and relatives to their last resting place.
