LUICK BARTON DIED MONDAY
PASSED AWAY MONDAY AFTER A LINGERING ILLNESS
Was Past 56 Years of Age and Most of His Life Was Spent Here.--Funeral This Afternoon

Luick A. Barton, a resident of this city and community most of the time throughout his life, died at the home of his mother, Mrs. Mary Granger, at 4 o'clock Monday afternoon, following a lingering illness. Some years ago while employed as a railway brakeman he met with an accident and since that time had only been able to undertake light work. His health declined steadily during the past two or three years although he was able to be up and about most of the time until recently and was only confined to his bed for about a week preceding his death.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 this afternoon at the Ross Funeral Home, with Rev. T. H. Harding, pastor of the Associated church, in charge. Interment will be made in Grace Hill cemetery.

Luick A. Barton was born on a farm near Ireton March 31, 1879, so was past 56 years of age at the time of his death. His father died when he was young and he came to Hawarden with his mother when a small boy and grew to manhood here. He was in the railway train service for a number of years and later was engaged in newspaper circulation work in South Dakota. He also was employed at various times as a hotel clerk in Hawarden. He was married at Mitchell, S.D., Feb. 25, 1926, and he and his wife made their home in Hawarden until her death on Aug. 11, 1932. Since then he has made his home with his aged mother.

Besides his mother he is survived by one brother, C. H. Barton of Sioux City, and one sister, Mrs. John Skatrud of Hawarden.

Mr. Barton was a man of modest, retiring disposition, and was honorable and upright in all his relations with his fellow men, meriting the esteem in which he was held by his acquaintances.

Source: Hawarden Independent, Oct. 24, 1935.

Neither this obituary nor his wife's (HI, Aug. 11, 1932) gives her name. However, an article in the Hawarden Independent (Nov. 4, 1926) reports a marriage in Mitchell, S.D. between Luick Barton and Mrs. Ella Johnson, but on Oct. 29 (not Feb. 25), 1926. But the groom appears to be this same Luick Barton: a son of Mrs. Mary Granger, a former Hawarden hotel clerk, an employee in the circulation department of the Sioux City Journal.
