OLDEST RESIDENT DIED LAST FRIDAY

Mrs. Mary Granger, 94, Hawarden's eldest resident both in years and in time lived in this city, passed away at the dinner table in the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Skatrud, last Friday noon [August 17]. While partaking of the meal, she suffered a stroke of her throat and died in her chair.

Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church Monday afternoon, with Rev. W. V. Bell in charge. Interment was in Grace Hill cemetery.

The deceased was born in Wright county, Illinois, on July 30, 1851. She grew up in that vicinity and was united in marriage with Alexander Barton on December 5, 1868. To this union were born five children, four of whom, Clara, Luella, Luke and Henry, preceded her in death. Mr. Barton passed away about 60 years ago in Minneapolis. Later she married Trumbull Granger, who died about 35 years ago.

For many years, Mrs. Granger operated a rooming and boarding house in Hawarden. About three years ago, when her health failed and she was unable to care for herself, she moved to the home of her daughter. Though past 94 years of age, Mrs. Granger was up and about the house every day.

Besides her daughter, Mrs. Ida Skatrud, she is survived by one brother, Luke Overacker, who resides in South Dakota. There are nine grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

She was a member of the Congregational church and attended regularly for many years.

Out of town relatives and friends who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. John Dalton of Gettyburg, S.D., Mary Gillim of Boone, Iowa, Mrs. Jack Bookmiller, Mrs. Volly Nicholas and Dan Sullivan of Beloit, S.D.
