Alice Van Riessen, 99 of Sioux Center died Sunday, July 25, 2010 at the Royale Meadows Care Center of Sioux Center.

A public viewing will be held from 4-6PM on Wednesday at Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

A visitation with family present will be held Thursday at Central Reformed Church of Sioux Center after 9:30AM followed by a funeral service beginning at 10:30AM with Rev. R. Van Rathbun officiating. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

The Van Riessen family prefer memorials be directed to Sioux Center Community Hospital Foundation in care of Royale Meadows Care Center.

Alice Van Riessen was born February 14, 1911 to John and Carrie (Jans) Vos near Hull, Iowa. She attended country school through the sixth grade before going to work for various families as a hired girl.

Alice met Gerrit Van Riessen when they were both working for the Fred Kuhl family. They were joined in marriage on November 30, 1926. The couple continued to work for different families until they moved to Sioux Center and Gerrit took a job as a cream hauler for the creamery. The couple was blessed with two sons, Art and John. Gerrit passed away from a heart attack in July of 1959. After Gerrit’s death, Alice remained busy, working for a time as a custodian at First National Bank as well as helping out various families. She enjoyed keeping herself busy. She was fond of baking and crocheting afghans and towels as well as spending time outside in her yard.

Alice was a longtime member of Central Reformed Church.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Art and Joan (Den Herder) Van Riessen; daughter-in-law, Carole (Cleveringa) Van Riessen all of Sioux Center; 6 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Wilbur and Arlone (Kroon) Vos of Sioux Center; special nephew and niece, Teus and Gerry Hasselar of Ede, The Netherlands, as well as numerous other nieces and nephews.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents; son, John Van Riessen; great-grandchild, Craig Haarsma; sister, Jeanette Vos; brother and sister-in-law, Jake and Johanna (Van Engen) Vos and half sister, Carrie (Jans) Klein.
