RITES HELD FOR MRS. LYNOTT, 81 -- One of Hawarden's Pioneer Residents Succumbs at Hospital After Illness of Several Months

Mrs. Ed Lynott, 81, one of Hawarden's pioneers, died last Wednesday noon at the Hawarden hospital from diabetes. She had been ill for several months but was able to get up and about until the Saturday preceding her death when she was taken to the hospital.

Funeral services were held at St. Mary's church at 10 o'clock Monday morning. Solemn high Mass was celebrated by Rev. Fr. R. Graf, assisted by Rev. Fr. Ernst of Akron and Rev. Fr. McGoey of Rock Valley. Five of her grandsons, Edward, James and William McCarthy, Robert Lynott of Chicago and Robert Lynott of Rock Valley and Tom Kelley were pall bearers. A sixth grandson, Norman Lynott, who is in the army and stationed at Fort Lewis, Wash., was to be the sixth pall bearer, but did not arrive until after the services had begun.

Mary Scanlon, oldest of a family of six children, was born in Manor Hamilton, County Leitrin [Leitrim], Ireland, January 22, 1867. She came to America in 1886, locating at Cedar Rapids. Her childhood sweetheart had preceded her to this country and had sent for her when he decided that he would make America his home. She married Edward Lynott in Cedar Rapids June 24, 1886.

In 1887 she came to Hawarden with her husband, who was employed as a car repair foreman for the North Western Railway company for 20 years. She then moved onto the farm adjoining Hawarden on the south and for more than 38 years she made this her home. Mr. Lynott died March 3, 1940.

Twelve children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Lynott, five of whom died in infancy, while the eldest son, Rev. Fr. A. J. Lynott, passed away October 28, 1936. Survivors are four daughters, Mrs. John McCarthy and Misses Catherine and Loretto Lynott of Hawarden and Mrs. James Gehan of Rock Rapids, and two sons, J. S. Lynott of Chicago and R. E. Lynott of Sioux City.

Relatives and friends from out-of-town who attended the funeral were Miss Eileen Lynott, Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Lynott and two daughters and Wm. C. Dealy of Sioux City; Mr. and Mrs. Edward McCarthy of Port Arthur, Texas; James McCarthy of Artesia, Calif.; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lynott of Rock Valley; Norman Lynott of Fort Lewis, Wash.; Robert Lynott of Chicago; Miss Kathleen Gehan of Washington, D.C.; Miss Mary Gehan and Will Gehan of Sioux Falls; Mr. and Mrs. James Gehan of Rock Rapids; Charles Gehan of Waterloo, and Mrs. Hattie Schiefen and Herman of Le Mars.
