Leonard G. Dirks, 77, of
Hawarden died Wednesday,
June 4, 1997, at the Hawarden
Community Hospital.

Services were held Monday,
June 9 at Trinity Lutheran
Church in Hawarden, with the
Rev, Loren Vogler officiating.

Burial was in Pleasant Hill
Cemetery at Ireton, Iowa, with
military rites conducted by the
Brunsville Heeren McHale
Wilken Post 714.

Mr. Dirks was born Jan. 10,
1920, near Ireton, Iowa, the son
of William H. and Johanna
(Pageler) Dirks. He was baptized
and confirmed in the Lutheran
faith. He attended the Ireton
School District 9. He served in
the U.S. Navy from 1944 to
1946, in the Landing Craft
Infantry as a Motor Machinist
3rd Class.

He married Dorothy Ohlrichs
on June 23, 1948, in Johnson.
Township, near Merrill, Iowa.

He was a farm hand and delivered
bottled gas. He also farmed
near Akron and Le Mars, Iowa
for many years.

He was a 50-year member of
the Brunsville American Legion,
where he was a past Commander.

He was a member of
Trinity Lutheran Church in
Akron, where he served on
various boards and Trinity
Lutheran Church in Hawarden,
where he served on the financial
board. He enjoyed fishing, latch
hook, and playing cards.

Survivors include his wife; two
sons and their wives, Dennis
and Peggy of Le Mars, and
Dwight and Jolene of Sioux
City; a daughter and her husband,
Lynette and Dennis
James of Pierre, S.D.; eight.
grandchildren; a brother, Henry
of Le Mars; a sister, Marie
Epling of Merrill, Iowa; and
three sisters-in-law. Fern and
Evelyn Dirks, and Marie and
her husband, Simon DeBoom,
all of Le Mars.

He was preceded in death by
his parents; three brothers,
Albert, LeRoy, and Robert; and
a son, Dale.
