From the Alton Democrat of jan 21, 1893. Sioux Cener News. A number of our people attended the funeral of Rev. Vander Ploeg at Orange City Tuesday.
Form the Orange City Sioux County Herald of Jan 18, 1893
Death of Rev. H. (Herman) Vander Ploeg. Last Friday Rev. H. Vander Ploeg pastor of the First Reformed church of this city, died at his home after a long and painful illness. Last October the disease which caused his death began to show itself and for some weeks past his health has been very feeble. His condition became such as to necessitate an operation, and on Friday Dr. DeBey assisted by Dr. Wormser of this city and Drs. Howe and Neal of Hawarden, performed it. The operaiton was very successful, but the vitality of the patient was so low from exhaustion that the shock was too grat and about 6 o'clock he passed away. H. Van der Ploeg was born in the Netherlands Jan 26, 1841, and came to this country in the sixties with his parents, who made themselve a home in the suburbs of Chicago. After completing a full course at hope College at Holland MI, he ented the Theological Seminary connected with it and in 1877 was licensed to preach. The new enterprise of Fremont Cemter Mi., awaited him and after a time he went to Greenleafton MN. wher he labored faithfully several years. His third charge was at Fulton IL, and during his pastorate a commendious new church was erected. The demands of this large held were to great for his precarious stenght and the there fore accepted a call from Vriesland, MI. After a service of three years there he found his health much better that he came to Orange City in the summer of 1890 and has since been the faithful and well beloved pastor of the First Reformed church. ( A paragraph of personal christian attributes follows)
His widow and an only daughter mourn the loss of their husband and father, there being no other near relatives except a neice, Mr. Vander Zwaag of Middleburg, and two nephews who live in Chicago and Holland MI.
The funeral took place yesterday afternoon from the church he had served druing life, and was the largest ever witnessed in our city. The services were conducted by Rev. J. F. Zwemer, P. Lepeltak, Jas. DePree and J. Huizenga, misiterial brethern of the Classis of Iowa to which deceased belonged. The remains were followed to their last resting gplace by a great number who desired to show in some way their respect and love for their pastor and friend.
(So he was buried in Orange City, no record exists. In the 1880 census he was living in York Filmore Co. MN with wife Annie and Herman 21. (son or nephew?) In the Ref. Church membership book of Orange City, lists Rev. H. Vander Ploeg and wife Hanna Geurink came 1890 daughter Minnie Vander Ploeg was born Jun 12, 1881. The mother and daughter moved to Holland MI.
